AIDS Education in Tanzania

Tanzania is one of the poorest countries in the world. It is also one of the countries where AIDS has had a profound effect. Currently the AIDS rate is about 8% in Tanzania, but higher in Arusha where St. Lucia serves.

The standard of medical care and availability of medications in Tanzania is a precarious situation. In order to receive anti-retroviral medications, a patient must be diagnosed with full-blown AIDS. Early intervention may prolong the lives of HIV-positive individuals. Unfortunately, in Tanzania, anti-retroviral medication is not available for all HIV-positive individuals.

Over 1 million children are orphaned in Tanzania.
